Shasta Baca
Hello! I’m Shasta, I have been with Brighton Police Department for 6 years with the Victim Services Unit.
I graduated from CU Boulder in 2015 with a Bachelor’s in Sociology (GO BUFFS) before starting my career in advocacy work.
Growing up, my sisters and I were victims of many of the crimes I respond to today which is a large reason why I have chosen the work that I do. These traumas and experiences have helped me become a better sister, partner, friend, and advocate today. I am a strong believer in “it takes a village” and am so thankful that Brighton Police Department is now a part of my village.
I love to sing, play guitar and violin. My sisters and I all grew up playing different instruments and had small gigs growing up. Music has always been a very healing coping mechanism for my sisters and I, and it remains that way today.
Outside of work, you can find me playing music, hiking, fishing, or camping with my nephew and fiancé all over CO.
I joined the Brighton Peer Support Team because I care about my peers and want to support anyone during a time of need. The work that we do here can be heavy at times, and I want to help share that load and be a listening and supportive ear to anyone who may need it.

I grew up in a small town east of Brighton where I was one of 6 children! After graduating high school I lived in a few different states but finally made my way back to Colorado! In 1997 I met the man I would eventually call my husband and in 2001 we were married! In 2002 we had a beautiful daughter and in 2003 we had another! My husband and I are still married and our two daughters are trying their hands at adulting!
In 2000 I began my police career in the Records Department of Lafayette Police Department. A short time later I transferred to their Evidence department where they asked me to start processing crime scenes! In 2005 I was hired by the Brighton Police Department and completed my college degree in 2008!
In July of 2018 I lost my mother to pancreatic cancer and in August of 2018 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After surgeries and several months of chemo, I completed my treatment in February of 2019. What a battle that was but I definitely feel stronger than ever, mentally at least! Working on the physical part!
These days I enjoy riding our ATV, camping, fishing and almost anything outdoors with my husband and our dog Bailey! We especially enjoy our backyard oasis!
In the winter months you can find me in the basement of our Brighton home watching Netflix and working on a puzzle!
I recently joined the Brighton Peer Support team because I believe I have a lot of life experience that can help me guide or help others in their time of need. I’m a good listener and I am passionate about making sure the employees of Brighton PD are represented and the needs are met!

As far back as I could remember, I’ve always known that I wanted to help people. My reason for being in law enforcement is to fight violence against women. For those of you who don’t know, I choose to fight violence against women because my mom was a victim of domestic violence while I was growing up.
Needless to say, I grew up being a very angry and sensitive teenager. It was only a matter of time before I realized I needed an outlet of emotion. In 2011, I started training in combat sports (wrestling, boxing, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, M.M.A., etc.), which was where I felt free to let out my aggression. On the other hand, I used music to either calm down or amp myself up (depending on the circumstances.
At times, I realized I could not be alone in feeling as sour as I did. Therefore, I decided I wanted to reach out to others on an emotional level so that they did not have to feel the same as I did. I strongly believe most good days are just a positive outlook away. I wish I learned that early on, but now I can only hope I can change someone else’s points of view.
My biggest goal in life is to encourage people to reach out for help if they ever need it. Whether people need a shoulder to lean on or someone to just listen - I’ll be there. It’d be my pleasure to be there for any and all of my peers.
